RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
